Our aim is to have all of Bob's films digitised, so they can be preserved properly and shared with new audiences on BG Player.
Getting there isn't free. Each film starts at a minimum of £300 just to get the original material out of the BFI, who look after our films alongside the rest of the UK's collections. Once it's scanned and restored, that figure rises to at least £600 per film. We're also aiming to scan every episode of Henry's Cat so they can be viewed as originally intended.
Every donation goes directly towards this work: getting films out of storage, scanned, restored, and back in front of an audience.
This is separate from donating on BG Player, which covers the cost of running the video server so the films already there stay free to watch.
This is a single frame from L'art Pour L'art. The old version came from copying a copy: the original 16mm print was transferred to video tape around 2008, then that tape was digitised, losing a little more detail at every step. The new scan was made at R3store Studios, going straight back to the original camera negative. The difference is stark: the whole of the old version, start to finish, takes up about the same space as eleven frames of the new scan. The original audio has also been re-digitised from the original optical sound negative, ready for audio restoration by Tom Lowe.
